Brought in to troubleshoot problems with VMWare based 64 bit RHEL 4.5 server prior to go-live with a major client of theirs. Once rectified and the systems was live, I was tasked with updating one of their client's estate of internet facing RHEL 4.5 based servers, ensuring all upgrade and backup planning was completed and adhered to. Successfully completed updates in specified timeframe.

Short-term contract.

Provided technical support and resolved issues with the college's Linux based (Redhat 4 Enterprise Linux) servers, knowledge transfer to the college's staff, based around Samba, Apache and RedHat Network updates.

Completed 3 separate upgrades, over the space of 8 weeks, on an ad-hoc basis.

Upgraded several IBM based Oracle development, test and production servers, running Linux, on-site for one of B2Net's clients in Sunderland. Formulated upgrade and backout plans in conjunction with the client and their DB support company.
Ensured backups were complete, upgraded RedHat AS2.1 OS to Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.5, restored data and ensured correct operation of systems once complete.

Installed and configured Solaris 9 OS onto PrimePower 1500 server domains, configured Solstice and Veritas Volume managers for resilience of OS and database disks prior to Symantec installing Cluster Software.

Short-term contract.

I was involved with troubleshooting and resolving backup problems with one of ComputerLand's client's CentOS 3.9 based servers (RHEL3 functional equivalent). Resolved hardware and OS issues which had been on-going for many months, despite efforts from the client's US based software house to diagnose, preventing successful backups taking place.
Wrote simple backup and restore procedure to enable users to ensure backups were reliably taken, and to ensure that the client was able to satisfactorily restore files.

Short-term ad-hoc work.

I was involved with troubleshooting and resolving Solaris networking problems within the company's SUN authorised repair facility. Solaris 8 and 9 based Ultras and T4s based around a test bench environment.

Responsible for supporting, administering, maintaining and documenting numerous remote virtual and standalone RedHat EL4.5 Linux servers in development, testing and production environments in an outsourced facility for a major logistics organisation.
I was responsible for building, and deploying RedHat EL4.5 based templates on several Vmware ESX servers into the user environments, documenting each for support purposes. Also day to day administration duties and troubleshooting on the ESX servers and underlying Vmware machines in order to meet the client's SLA.
I was also involved with setting up and configuring Apache and Jboss servers for interfacing with WebSphere systems
Also setting up, and updating RHEL4 systems within RedHat Network, installing updates, and ensuring that only authorised updates were applied as per contractual obligations.

Systems Administration and support on Solaris and redhat based servers and workstations in a development environment.
Also built, configured and installed OpenNMS based monitoring systems to enable users to view and respond to problems as and when they occurred before and during software performance tests.

This role involved the building and deployment of Solaris based backup solutions into Fujitsu's UK data centres. Mainly comprising of Sun V240s and L25 tape drives, under Solaris 9 and Veritas NetBackup.
In addition, I undertook a comprehensive review of the company's IT estate, recommending and advising on upgrades for equipment reaching end of service life. I also undertook he packaging and deployment of Fujitsu's in-house developed monitoring packaging throughout all of the available servers in the data centres.

The role involved providing 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support of Solaris and Linux based workstations and servers for this global aerospace systems manufacturer.
Equipment used included Sun workstations and servers, ranging from Ultra5s to V440s and V880s, utilising Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 9 serving a range of applications ranging from CAD (SDRC Ideas9), Oracle databases and Apache webservers. Suse 9.3, Redhat9 and Redhat AS running on Dell servers running webservers and print/samba sharing. Raid arrays (transtec) utilising both Veritas Volume Manager and Disksuite.
The role also involved the management of a small domain of Windows NT/2000 systems running on SunPCI devices attached to the Sun workstations.

The role involved providing 2nd and 3rd line support of Solaris based Unix servers in remote locations for a military messaging system.
Equipment used included Sun Ultra80, Ultra10 and E4500 servers, RAID arrays (Sun and Baydel) SANs (Sagitta) and heavily customised and secured Solaris 2.6 OS, Netscape and Apache web servers, Samba for sharing home areas to NT clients and Nexor messaging subsystems.
Systems were stand alone, or for larger sites, clustered utilising proprietary clustering software

Responsible to the Unix Desktop Service Delivery Manager for support and administration of the installed base of over 400 RedHat based Linux workstations and servers and HP/UX based servers used within the Met Office for scientific, email and general office applications.
The role involved 1st, 2nd and 3rd level support of Linux and HP/UX Operating Systems and a range of applications including Mozilla web browsers, knode news readers, Ximian Evolution email clients utilising exchange connector for integration into the existing exchange based system. It was also necessary to be involved with backing up and restoring users' files via OmniBackup

Responsible for providing Unix build and Support services to the Project Manager. Project was building and integrating Solaris based systems into several Police Forces. The role involved building Sun servers (SunFire V880, V240 and V120), loading and configuring Operating Systems (Solaris 8) to pre-defined standards, loading and testing Oracle 8.1.7 software and test databases, Netbackup, Veritas Volume Manager, Disksuite and Tuxedo. Also basic involvement with loading software (Oracle Client 8.1.7, Business Objects 5.1.7) onto NT/XP based PCs, and testing connectivity with Solaris servers.
