Worked on the reporting scheduling database, specifically the ETL process to load this database from the programming OnAir OLTP database. Duties included writing PL/SQL, SQL, Unix scripts to accomplish this loading and transformation process. Also involved a lot of tuning of the existing ETL process, and Perl to perform various sanity checking activities.
Provided production support and development DBA support.

Working in the Payments and Registrations department, my role was involved with designing new components that were needed by the business, e.g. online payments protocols such as CV2,3D Secure,URU and Age Verification. These components were implemented using PL/SQL and SQL on a Solaris platform.
Environment was J2EE with some C# modules, and part of my job involved bug analysis by reading through Java / C# code to determine issues in the interface between Java / C# and the database.
Also involved with writing PL/SQL code to interrogate the data warehouse to retrieve customer information for customer service reps.
Exposed to both waterfall and agile development methodologies.

My role as Oracle Designer / Developer was to translate user requirements into a design, develop and test improvements to the Government¡¯s Company Incorporation system. This system is used to hold information on all companies in the UK (about 1.8 million active UK companies currently exist). These improvements were for enhanced functionality and to improve system performance. All development was server-focused. In addition to this, I also did other development work such as automating their software release process for Unix / Oracle based software. Application environment was J2EE.
Also responsible for writing ETL code to extract data from datawarehouse to third party companies.
Other duties: data migration and analysis.

My post had many facets to it. Listed below are my areas of responsibility / expertise:

• Design Authority
Responsible for driving the development of modules in the product forward. This involved liaising with the technical director and producing high / intermediate design and functional requirements documents.
• Senior Oracle developer
Working from a functional requirements specification, I was responsible for producing detailed design documents, and then developing PL/SQL modules from these design specifications. Also, data migration and analysis.
• Troubleshooter
Responsible for correcting performance problems on the client¡¯s site. Involved SQL / PL/SQL statement performance analysis, wait event analysis, including low level trace file analysis using system event alerts and latch contention analysis.
• Datawarehousing developer.
Responsible for the design and development of an ETL (extraction, transformation and loading) module to move fact and dimension data from live database instance to reporting instance. Data was transferred between instances using a series of cron-controlled unix / SQL scripts, and placed in staging tables. Transformation, validation and loading were accomplished using a combination of PL/SQL scripts and views. The last part in the chain was the use of a combination of materialized views and Oracle dimensions to ensure query rewrite was used when multi-dimensional queries where run from a reporting tool (in this case Business Objects). A combination of SQL*Plus autotrace and tkprof were used to analyze query plan execution to monitor use of materialized views.
• Development DBA
Provided cover for main development DBA. Responsibilities included creation/maintenance of Oracle/ Unix user accounts and maintenance of tablespaces / datafiles. Also involved diagnosis of performance problems and rectifying these problems.
