I began my career by working exclusively with OpenVMS but ever since 1994 I have gained much experience in roles which included the support of Unix in its various flavours. As a result I am comfortable and adaptable in the management of many forms of Unix and have been able to provide my employers with a consistent, first-rate level of support across all platforms.
At Cellnet I began to acquire HP/UX, skills which I then put into practice at NTL upon the departure of their one HP/UX administrator.
The same holds true for Sun equipment. I have worked with this on a number of assignments, my experience being further reinforced at NTL through the attending of a Sun Administration course.
I continued to use and build upon my Sun and HP skills at Yellow Pages. I was part of a cross-platform support team. At Vodafone I continued to improve my HP/UX skills and additionally, acquired support skills in Redhat Linux.
In both the Unix and OpenVMS environments I have gained an understanding of the two main database products, Oracle and INGRES, and have been able to support either at an operating system level.

At Vodafone I have been working in the Platform Support team. My main role has been to research and build HP/UX patch and application bundles, for release into the live network. Vodafone uses HP/UX nodes to provide the base for the mobile phone network, running the accounts and connection software for both pay-as-you-go and contract phones. As well as planning and testing the new release, I would provide a tested installation document. This takes the operations staff through pre-upgrade checks and tasks, provides a running order for the products' installation, and indicates any additional configuration tasks which might be required. Furthermore I would test and provide documentation for the “ad hoc” patches which HP recommend to resolve production issues. Much of the daily responsibility has been to support a computer lab which provides representative hardware configurations. These are then used by Application development staff for the testing of new software releases. My support work in this environment has included the handling of any hardware or software problems raised by the developers, and the re-installing of the operating system to known base releases. Throughout this last year I have become involved with the Platforms Teams planning, installation and maintenance of Redhat Linux version 4. This platform has been selected to replace the current live OpenVMS nodes (running the HLR application). My involvement with Linux has required day-to-day system management and the rebuilding of the test systems using Redhat's Kickstart procedure by means of a Redhat satellite system. The hardware platform selected for this Linux project was HP ProLiant nodes. I helped with the installation and maintenance of these nodes in the Lab environment. I also implemented a backup system for the computer room using Legato and a HP tape robot system. This replaced a bespoke system which ran using backup on VMS and Ignite on HP/UX. |
| Unix System Admin | Yell Group | Apr 2004 | Mar 2005 |
I worked as part of the Server Support Team, administering 40 HP/UX servers, over one hundred Sun servers and around 10 VAX/VMS and Tru64 nodes. The role came about due to an increase in project work; my main role was to back fill for the permanent staff. I provided system management support to each of these platforms, checking for problems and responding to calls from the corporate help desk. In this role I used all my previously gained skills to provide a first rate service for my employer. Although this was mainly a Unix role, several key systems were still running on VMS - thus my skills in this area have been kept up to date.. At Yellow Pages I built on my Netbackup and Legato skills, both of which were used to secure the companies systems. |
